Wednesday Excerpts #5
I had two pieces due today. One was a 1200-word short story based on the prompt, “living.” I posted that here.
The other was for the “52-scenes” challenge, based on the prompt, “flakes.” I wrote another version of this scene, from the point of view of people live-streaming a hearing and chatting about it online. Lighthouse Island, like Tybee Island, has a very active, often argumentative online neighborhood forum. The fictional one is called “AroundHere.com.”
Here is a very brief excerpt that picks up where the story where last week’s post ended. If Salty Pause was actually a published book, this would be a spoiler. But it’s very draft, and the book is far from finished, so the ending could change and even if it doesn’t, I doubt you’ll remember this piece.
Salty Paws Excerpt
R: What a bunch of flakes we have on this island.
B: We always brag about being quirky. How do you think we get that way, lol?
C: Hey, did y’all hear what they just said? Some lady named Mildred Banks owns that land. Who the hell is she?
P: That was Audrey’s great-aunt Millie. She was best friends with old Miss Abigail, whose family owned the speakeasy during Prohibition. She left here a long time ago. There was a rumor she’s the one who ended up with the lost pirate gold. I’d be surprised if she’s still alive.
B: So no dog kennels and no condos?
E: Who knows? Looks like the hearing is over, but with Red Delaney involved I seriously doubt the arguing is.
